My Sketchbooks

I use all sorts of tools, surfaces and mediums to create art. I get too excited and like to use and do everything at the same time! I am very impatient! I draw in my sketchbook and sometimes on scraps of paper. I used to draw on my walls until mum told me off (I should have known better at 16!) Sometimes using paint on it’s own to create a painting seems boring at times and so traditional, so I use PVA glue, drawing inks, pastels and pencils all together. I use paint as a base for my creativity which is then is covered in layers of other types of media. Texture in my work is very important, because I like people to be able to touch my work, to want to touch my work.

My influences and inspiration come from my life and my travels. These could be from articles I read, dreams I have, people I look up to, triggered by an event in my life and the seasons. Sometimes I tare out pages in my old sketch books to create something new. I am constantly trying to define art as well as create art in new ways.
My favourite season is summer. I love to create art outside and be with nature. In summer my paintings become very bright and bold and colourful, my style changes completely, I’m happier as I embrace summer.
Music inspires me, some make me laugh and others make me cry. Music evokes feeling and can help me project this onto canvas. Sometimes I also use poetry and writing to accompany my art, as a tool to help the audience understand what I’m trying to project. This booklet is a prime example. This booklet could be considered as a piece of art. It is a way for me to expand and take my art further.

Who are my favourite artists? This question I dread. Andy Goldsworthy and his work involving nature, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol along with local artists I know. I have often come across these artists in my studies and for reference. It is impossible to have a favourite. I don’t like Tracey Emin’s work. In 1998 she presented an unmade bed and called it art. It didn’t say anything to me. I don’t understand the Chapman Brothers and absolutely detest their models of children portrayed in ways I think inappropriate, but that could have been the reaction they wanted. Again it didn’t say anything to me (Probably because it scared me off first!) I discover new artists all the time but I don’t really worry about what other artists are doing. I focus on myself, my work and my own goals.
