Commissioning Donna
Commissioning Donna Vokes to produce a work of art can be highly rewarding for both parties. The work is personal and unique with all the characteristics you want to capture and treasure. All bespoke artwork are specifically produced for you, to your requirements. Past clients include charities, local theatre groups and private clients have commissioned Donna to create a work of art in the form of a painting, illustration, sketch and instillation. Clients commission Donna when they cannot find something that that conveys what they want their lounge/work environment to say about themselves and the type of person they are and are in need of illustrations for advertising material. Other clients simply want to give a unique and quirky gift to a loved one for Christmas. If you think you would like to buy and own a bespoke work of art and want to approach Evanga Studios, here are some points and ideas to consider. Donna will work with you to help you find out what you would like and provide a quote and contract. Clients are charged for all artwork produced. Consultation with the artist is free.
Developing your brief
Before the artist can proceed with your commission, she needs to know what you would like. This is done by submitting a brief. The brief is a document which will set out what you want from the artist and the type of work you want the artist to produce. You can record your thoughts and ideas in writing. There is nothing to stop you including research or your inspirations. A summary is submitted to the artist who will work with you to develop and complete it.
If you are unsure how write a brief or still don’t know what you would like the artist to create, Donna can help you by meeting in person. We have also provided some guidelines below to help you get started.
1. Who or what is the work for? Is it for your place of work or something for your home, or something you want to give as a gift?
2. Are there any constraints or special requirements? Think about dimensions of the work, the space where the work will go, the function of the work, any materials to be used?
3. What are you looking for? What kind of artwork do you like; do you prefer a particular style?
4. What’s your budget? Does this include installation and delivery?
Finalising the Brief
You have a brief. You know what you want, the style and you know what the art work is for. You need to approach us to talk about it and find out what the artist is able to create in response to your brief. You may have several ideas that need talking through first or you may want the artist to submit her ideas. It may take one meeting or three. The outcome will enable you to proceed with the commission or not. If you wish to proceed then the artist will help you finalise your brief where you will agree with the materials the work is to be constructed from, the timescale and the cost and then Donna can set a contractual agreement which will include timescale. You will receive a copy of the brief and contract. Once the contract has been signed Donna can get to work on your brief and will remain in contact with you throughout the process.
Other points to consider
Do you want the artist to produce any sketches or models for your consideration before the making of the artwork commences?
Delivery - who is responsible for the delivery of the artwork? Are there any special delivery requirements? What are the costs and who pays for delivery?
Installation - will the artwork you are commissioning require installing? If so who will do this? Installation may be carried out by the artist and/or a technician.
Discuss this with the artist in advance and agree any potential costs.
Timescale - agree a timescale for the completion of the commission.
Maintenance - does the artwork require any ongoing maintenance? What measure do you need to take (if any) to ensure the artwork remains in good condition?
Ownership & moral rights - under copyright laws the artist possesses first ownership of a work of art they themselves have created. You need to agree in advance with the artist the ownership and copyright of the artwork.
